Emily Chimiak is an acrylic painter from Maryland. She studied art and chemical engineering at the University of Maryland at College Park, where she received a full scholarship and bachelor’s degrees. She also studied with Les Helenes, a studio in France.

In Emily’s paintings, countless layers seem to rapidly emerge to the surface. The result is a complex geometrical form that has been described as mystical and emotional. Through the paintings, she explores the question, “what is the function of painting in the collective effort to communicate? Buried under pieces of symbols, lacking standardized rules of grammar, the message in a painting would hide but for our instinct to endow patterns with meaning. What is the relationship between painting and other expressions?

Currently, Emily collaborates with Elle Chimiak, a writer and chemist at Amherst College, to produce a dialogue between paintings and poetry.
